Supply chain

We ensure our suppliers uphold the same high standards we set ourselves and are independently verified as doing so

Enhanced due diligence

Enhanced due diligence

We ensure all our suppliers are aligned with our ESG criteria, including around employee rights, environmental protection and compliance with legislation and regulation. We continuously increase the disclosures that we require of potential vendors before they’re given a contract and throughout the onboarding process.
Ongoing ESG compliance

Ongoing ESG compliance

In addition to existing mandatory certifications and compliance with our Code of Conduct and Code of Business Ethics for partners and suppliers, we aim to continuously improve our ESG standards, policies and controls while implementing a robust declaration process for our vendors and suppliers.

We work with our suppliers to ensure they understand and maintain the same values and standards as us

Our stakeholders hold us accountable and we will hold our suppliers accountable for upholding high standards in human and labour rights, environmental performance as well as business ethics.

Reliability

To ensure we can rely on our supply chain, we focus on building resilience through targeted capital expenditure while continuing to roll out fibre infrastructure, enhancing our retail presence and optimising renewable energy solutions.

Sustainable practices

We continue our engagement with suppliers through initiatives such as the rollout of additional sites with ‘green’ solutions to minimise their environmental impact and ensure improvement in social performance.

Resilience

We are committed to responsible business practices and improving the resilience of our value chain by reinforcing the robustness of our business for the future.

Effective partnerships

We continue building effective partnerships with the long-term objective of positively impacting the environment and society.

Strategic partnerships

Partnership with American Tower
Corporation (ATC)

On 30 September 2024, Airtel Africa renewed tower lease agreements with American Tower Corporation (ATC) for approximately 7,100 sites across Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Niger which were set to expire over the next 12 to 24 months, for a period of 12 years. The tower lease agreements with ATC were initially entered as a sale and leaseback transaction during 2015/16, for ten years. The renewals ensure we continue to benefit from contract structures, including the proportion that is linked to foreign currency.

Integral to the contractual terms is the focus on renewable energy solutions across a significant number of sites, particularly in Nigeria. This is expected to benefit Airtel Africa’s operating costs in the medium term as the reliance on diesel is reduced, while also advancing our ambition to drive the reduction of GHG emissions across the footprint, which remains a key priority for our sustainability agenda. As of 31 March 2024, together we deployed ‘green’ solutions on 1,073 sites.
